The park which is about 4000 sq Km has about 200 workers as park guards and officers living within the natural reserve as communities. Trust me, some of the animals in the park show up at these communities and common among them are the bush pigs. The park has about 600 elephants, a lot of the animals of the antelope class with the majority being Kops. A male Kop can have up to 60 females else it has to join the bachelors club. Just like any natural habitat, there are several streams and ponds which get filled depending on the season. The seasons also determine which parts could be reached and /or not.
A visit to the museum reveals the presence of Lions, Leopards, Buffalos, Hyenas, Pythons, Elephants, Tortoise, Turtles and many others that can be found in the park. The antelope class of animals in the park could be spotted right from the entrance to the main reception and at most places. In fact, they are the commonest after the Baboos. Just be careful of the Baboos as you walk around the reception with food and some items, else, they may whisk them from your hand. Someone left our bus door ajar only for us to see a Baboo running away with some personal belongings. After a hot chase, it dropped it for us to collect. Such a fun to chase a prospective “robber”.
There are private business entities that have set up in the park to offer tourism services since the commission is only available to protect the natural habitat. So guest houses and a motel have been put up to accommodate visitors and offer some social services. For transport, the Safari hub is available within the park.
The park is visited at a fee and not free. At the entrance, one is expected to pay the following before you could be considered to enjoy the views in the park.
Adults – 20 Ghc
Senior High School students – 5 Ghc
Kid >=5 years – 3 Ghc
The vehicle in which tourist ride- 7 Ghc.
These charges are to enable one gain entrance to the park but does not allow you to go into the forest without a guard. The best you could do is to stay around the reception else you pay 5 Ghc/hour per person to tour the park in addition to the gate fees.
