One of the things coming up strongly these days is the way people are going to be prosecuted for not respecting the TV Licensing ACT-1966 (NLCD 89) of Ghana.
Many have argued that it is about what is being shown on our televisions and whether the contents are worthy to bring up children in a morally acceptable way. Before we battle all these, we have to take a look at the law and the intention of the crafters.
Some of the striking excerpts from the law are as below.
- Section – 1 – Television Receiving Set Licence.
- (1) Except in such circumstances as may be prescribed, no person shall instal or use any television receiving set unless there is in existence in relation to that set a valid licence granted by the licensing authority under this Decree and to be known as a television receiving set licence.
(2) For the purposes of any prosecution for the infringement of the provisions of this paragraph, where a television receiving set is found in any premises occupied by any person, that person shall, unless he proves the contrary, be presumed to use the television receiving set.

I urge you to discard even unused TV sets in your homes especially if you are using them for decoration purposes.
Watch out if you are selling TV sets and you are not in compliance with the law.
But of another interest to me is for people to know that if you want to go and buy television and you are not holding your TV license, you might be refused even if you are having all the money it takes to buy whatever brand you are interested in. Sayeth the law oooo. Check Section 3!
- Section – 3 – Sales, Etc Of Television Sets To Unlicensed Persons Prohibited.
- Except in such circumstances as may be prescribed, no person shall sell or hire or otherwise dispose of a television receiving set to any person other than to the holder of a valid television receiving set licence granted in relation to that set.
Just don’t be caught on the wrong side of the law.
