Shown in the pictures above are two separate locally manufactured masks to ease the pressure on the masks imported from abroad. But one thing we need to maintain is the quality of the masks manufactured locally compared to what is usually imported.

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) is known to have published guidelines for the production of local face mask. Some were approved by the FDA for public use and even in some instances, for use in performing medical duties.  The big question is whether the FDA approval stamp is enough to ensure the quality and safety of the locally produced face masks?

What is worrying is that one cannot readily identify how a protective mask is likely to look like. But it is obvious that any mask that enables you to freely breathe without any element of resistance is likely not to be protective.

With the two masks presented in this write-up, one is from the masks given to teachers and students by the government as part of support and measures to re-open schools to final year students. The other is one of the FDA’s approved face masks produced and distributed to a group of health workers.

Checking under the microscope at x 40 magnification just as has been done previously for N95 face masks, the two samples of face masks in this article had pores which may suggest that users may suffer inadequate protection. Readers could refer to the article in the link to check what defines face masks comparable to the bests of N95.

A                             B                          C                              D

Pictures A and B are micrographs from the face masks given to teachers to prepare the final years to complete their academic cycle. The second batch of pictures C and D are from an FDA approved face mask which was given to health workers.

Comparing these to the pores seen in N95 when subjected to similar exercise as mentioned, one needs to be careful in what he or she uses with the hope of protecting themselves against the deadly virus. Basically, watch the materials used and the number of layers with adequate lining.

Do not take it for granted. Be properly protected!!!!
