I cannot imagine I will resume paying my income tax from the month of October. As for the free water and electricity for Ghanaians, only those using solar systems and bore-holes might not have experienced the kind gesture of the President of Ghana.
Admittedly, I am one of the people who benefitted from the relief measures introduced by the government in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic in Ghana. These include the subsidy on water and light bills for all Ghanaians and the income tax relief for health workers.
The Minister for Finance, in his statement to Parliament on Monday, 30 March 2020, on the economic impact of COVID-19 on the Ghanaian economy, had outlined several tax incentives for taxpayers in Ghana. A written directive from the Commissioner-General of Ghana Revenue Authority or the passage of a legislative instrument made the desire of government come to pass.
Ghanaians especially health workers should be mindful of the fact that the income tax waiver that was given since April 2020 will be ending on their payslip and should not be used in planning. Do not wait to be shocked at the end of the month when the introductions from COVID-19 to ease financial burdens disappear from your payslips.
