The presiding officer of one of the polling stations inadvertently added the pink sheet for the election results to the ballot papers in the ballot box and sealed it. At the collation center, he realized that he could not find the pink sheet which he was to use and render accounts to the electoral commission. He later remembered that he had lodged the pink sheet in the ballot box sealed with the various political party seals. Without thinking of the implications, he single-handedly cut the seals to remove the pink sheet.
Upon seeing the action, one of the party agents raised an alarm of the presiding officer’s intention to change figures on the pink sheet. This brought supporters and security officials to the collation center and it took over an hour to get an understanding of that error of procedure committed by the presiding officer.
What restored calm was that all the party agents in that polling station were contacted to bring copies of their pink sheets after the counting of the ballots. They then compared the figures on the pink sheet the presiding officer was trying to take out of the ballot box to the sheets the polling agents had.
The perception of possible rigging in elections is enough to set a whole system ablaze without each giving chances. Tempers were high and no amount of words could calm the candidates and party folks.
It is important for us to be sure of what we say than to peddle falsehood. The news went all over the place that the presiding officer had been arrested for going to stuff the ballot boxes with papers to favour one of the candidates. This was never the reality but the perception had thrived to the extent of destroying the beautiful election that went on in the area.
