In recent times, atrocities are reported daily in all facets of life. These include heinous crimes that are perpetrated on fellow human beings. Deciding not to count afar off, one will not struggle to recall the MP that was assassinated in the central region while he was on the campaign train. A Professor of law was found dead in his house in cold blood and quite disturbing in a similar manner was what one of the head pastors of Assemblies of God Church suffered in a Church’s office while the congregation was waiting for him to show up with the message for the Sunday’s service.

At times you are forced to hide your experience when you hear of what someone went through. The moment I was thinking of who might have stolen the tri-cycle the family-owned, I heard of how a Bullion van was attacked by armed men who killed a policeman and an innocent woman who was selling by the roadside where the shooting spree occurred.

A story is told of a school where children who were not more than 15 years had a virtual platform and a group where the ladies in the class who are part of the group post indecent pictures and videos of themselves while the boys are responsible for buying phones and internet packages for ladies of the group to service them. A lot about this could be said later about the effects virtual classes might bring to the upbringing of our children.

At the heart of these, where do we place the scripture “Train up a child in the way he should go [teaching him to seek God’s wisdom and will for his abilities and talents], Even when he is old he will not depart from it”, Proverbs 22:6? Are these the products from the training given to the people who get involved in the criminal activities mentioned severally? Are the trainers of the children neglecting their responsibilities?

With my background, I would not hesitate to accept the fact that responsibilities in bringing up children are largely that of the fathers. Are therefore atrocities witnessed in this world as a result of the irresponsibilities of fathers? Mind you that many great women have assumed the role of fathers their babies never had and a lot of them have done the work to the best of their abilities. But can it also be said that their bests have not been enough and therefore have contributed to the many crimes witnessed?

A story is told in the Holy Book, which is the most read book in the world, that the comparable helper to Adam was deceived into missing the mark of the one who planted them in the garden in which they lived. The abuse of his power of discretion led them to incur the wrath of their master and a great calamity which creation had ever witnessed came upon them. One can imagine what would have happened if the second Adam had failed and had been selfish.

Fathers are to take charge of the upbringing of their children and chasten them with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men; … When they do wrong, discipline them with a rod of men. As much as it will be difficult, fathers are to show the way and live the life they desire their children to take.

One will not shudder to mention that it will be one’s effort to bring up good children trained with good principles. Good seeds groomed and nurtured to matured plants to fruit are more likely to succeed than those left to their own plight and at the mercy of nature.

It takes the correction of fathers to straighten children on the right path that they will not depart when they grow. What is the contribution of fathers in the crimes rampantly reported on various platforms? People are walking around with vengeance in their hearts and venting their anger and neglect on innocent people. It gets to a point that it becomes a habit that requires some level of rehabilitation to correct.

To demonstrate love does not mean eliminating hatred but the ability to choose love in the presence of hatred. The training of this level-headedness is the responsibility of the family under the headship of fathers.

Having the opportunity to celebrate another day for fathers should give us a reason to reflect on the successes and failures of the role fathers have played in atrocities of this world and the many despicable criminals spread worldwide. The psalmist acknowledges the fact that the people the Lord chastens become blessed. This presupposes that fathers chastening and correcting their children are blessing them for the future.

Fathers should not shun away from their responsibilities and the world will be a better place for us all.
