Mr. Richard Bannerman who was the Regional Medical Laboratory Scientists of the former Brong Ahafo Region has retired from active service as the laws stipulate. I have been one of the fortunate people he influenced during his time. It is important to me to let others know and appreciate why he must be celebrated. He might not be perfect but I think he paid his dues.
I first encountered Mr. Bannerman in 2010 in Sunyani when he first spoke to me about the activities of the Brong Ahafo branch of Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS) and the need for members to be involved. It was difficult to appreciate his call at that time. For me, all I needed to do was to do my work as professionally required without recourse to the professional body. I lacked the detailed knowledge of what the professional body stood for. He literally pestered me continuously till I took over from him as the Chairman of the professional body in the Brong Ahafo Region.
Since then I have not looked back and needed to deliver. While thinking about the retirement organized in his honour, I remembered how I owe a lot in my current existence to him professionally. Recently, I visited a church on one of the Sundays when I was away from home. Due to the covid-19 protocol requirements, our names and contacts were to be written before one entered the building for service. I gave the person that was attending to me the name. He suddenly raised his head and looked at me and said, “you are a doctor. The name is familiar. Dr. Dennis Adu-Gyasi. I have been seeing you on TV in various interviews”. I could not deny but to thank him and express my regards. When we closed from the church service, someone walked to me and told me that when he heard my voice during the bible studies which I contributed, he remembered he had heard the voice before and came over to talk as a colleague.
I would not have been this popular if not for Mr. Bannerman who got me into professional politics to play my part. I keep wondering what at all he saw in me to trust with such duties.
On this day as friends and well-wishers celebrate your service and devotion, I personally want you to know that I respect you a lot and I am grateful you gave me a chance to serve even without my will initially. It has paid off and I am reaping the benefit. The love I receive from the medical laboratory fraternity is great and cannot be measured. You got that happening.
I will forever mention your name anytime I get the platform to speak professionally.
