It is about nine (9) years since the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS) decided at a congress in Kumasi, Ashanti Region at the Anita Hotel to disaffiliate from the Health Service Workers’ Union (HSWU). Despite the opposition and the long years of detraction, the Medical Laboratory Professional Workers’ Union (MELPWU) was launched on 13th October, 2021 at the Desert Pastures Auditorium, Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region, Ghana.
The occasion was blessed with the presence of Mr. Austin Akufo Gamey as the special guest of honour and by Mr. Anthony Awotwe (Deputy Chief Labour Officer) who acted on behalf of the Chief Labour Officer who was equally engaged in other important assignments.
The following executives steered the affairs of the Union for the launch to see the light day. These were;
i). Mr. Lawrence Yine – President
ii). Patrick Nsobila – 1st Vice President
iii) Mr. Cephas Senyo Akortor – General Secretary
iv). Prosper Senyo Sokpe – Deputy General
v). Emmanuel Salifu – Financial Secretary
vi). Sis Yaa Nyarko Adae – Deputy Financial Secretary
vii). Sis Mariama Mohammed – Treasurer
The launch of the union is historic and all others agree. We need to guard the union in order not to remain subservient to other unions.
The occasion was used to also launch the website of the union.
