The Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS) as part of its 2021 National Annual Congress in Upper East Bolgatanga, went to the Paga Crocodile Pond on the 15th of October 2021. Some representatives of the professionals used the occasion to seek permission to speak to the upper primary students of the Tedam District Assembly Primary School in the community. This school is just opposite the location of the tourist center.
The team was represented by MLS Dr. Tony Basingna (Consultant MLS, Upper West Regional Medical Laboratory Scientists and a Businessman), MLS Paul Ntiamoah (Ahafo Regional Medical Laboratory Scientists), MLS Moses K. Woli (Bono East Regional Chairman of GAMLS, and Head of Department of Medical Laboratory Technology/Radiology at College of Health and Well-Being), MLS Mark Danquah (Bono Regional Chairman of GAMLS) and MLS Dr. Dennis Adu-Gyasi (Consultant MLS, Research Fellow at Kintampo Health Research Center and PRO of GAMLS).
The team motivated the students and encouraged them not to be limited by situations around them to achieve what they want and are purposed to become. That they have no excuse to be limited by their location. Among these students were those who aspire to become teachers, pilots, lawyers, medical doctors, bank managers, police officers and soldiers. They were given tips on how they could achieve their dreams. The basic trick was to learn and always do what their teachers tell them. Learning their books was identified as one key duty they needed to be the professionals they wanted to be.
When asked about some of the critical things they needed in the school, the students mentioned a source of water (bore-hole) and books to use in a library.
Since this was unplanned activity, the representatives donated an amount to the Assistant Headmistress to buy a few textbooks of the new curricula she mentioned as needed.
The gesture which touched many hearts was seen as something that could be taken up as part of the social responsibilities of the Professional Body. The requests of the students will be discussed for guidance to support the school.
