It is being communicated in a Press briefing on 25th October 2022 that some members of parliament within the Majority whip of the Parliament of Ghana have requested for the removal of certain Ministers of State before they could continue to be involved in looking at the government’s business in the house. A Memo has also been seen by some Minority MPs of the Parliament of Ghana seeking to impose censorship on the government’s business if the Minister of Finance to be specific is not fired.
Is what is happening in Parliament currently not populism?
Article 174 of the 1992 Constitution clarifies who can impose tax, review, or remove tariffs on Ghanaians.
One of the primary drivers of the rising cost of things in Ghana is FUEL (the exchange rate too is a factor though). It is known that taxes account for about 50% of the cost of the fuel everyone buys in Ghana.
Can they show us their interest to HELP the populace to sail through the hardship by IMMEDIATELY voting to remove the taxes on fuels if even it has to go by a PRIVATE MEMBER’S BILL?
Going after persons and censorship of government activities will only make matters worse.
I see people trying to speak what the itching ears want to hear but have no interest to ameliorate the hardship.
