There have been several questions about who a Medical Laboratory Scientists is and what role do medical laboratories play in the healthcare delivery system globally and in Ghana as well. From one of the releases and the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory SCientists position paper on MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE PROFESSION, I put forward this extract for public education.<\/p>\n
Medical Laboratory Science involves the analysis of human tissues, body fluids, excretions, production of biologicals, design and fabrication of equipment for the purpose of medical laboratory diagnosis, treatment and research; and includes medical microbiology (also comprising bacteriology, parasitology, virology, and mycology), clinical chemistry, haematology, blood transfusion science, histopathology, histochemistry, immunology, cytogenetics, exfoliative cytology, forensic science, molecular biology, bioethics and laboratory management (ISO 15189, 2012, 2017 and GS ISO15189:2017). Medical laboratory tests are utilized for the purpose of diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, research, surveillance and prevention of disease (IBMS, 2015). Integral features of each of the specialities include diagnostic testing, research, education, laboratory information management, marketing and administration.<\/p>\n
In Ghana, the practice of Medical Laboratory Science is regulated by law and one needs a license to work in that professional field. Such professionals are liable for their actions and clients could take legal actions against a facility that employs the services of unqualified people. Since the license of every laboratory professional in public and private facilities are to be renewed every year, next time you visit the hospital or private laboratory, find out if the PERSON is QUALIFIED ooo.\u00a0 Don’t say you were not cautioned.<\/p>\n
