The greatest responsibility is on the telcos and the financial institutions. There can be a countless number of people and their experiences on how they have been duped or had suffered insults from scammers who failed to duped them.

One of my friends who was an agent for mobile money transactions suffered at the hands of scammers some thousands of Ghanaian cedis and it took him hell with police reports and traveling almost 14 hours by road to chase his scammers to retrieve the money. I can tell you for a fact that the telecommunication company never showed any interest in helping him retrieve that money. It was seen as his own negligence and had to bear the brunt alone. Thanks to the security agents and his resilience in getting back his hard earn money.

One wonders how these scammers get to know exactly what is in the wallet of customers, some details of transactions, and whether they do not have accomplices planted as moles within the services. Just last night, I heard of someone who had been cheated in a similar manner that is on the run from the people she now owes. She could hardly have the peace to work at one location.

In my own experience, I managed to engage a scammer and kept him online for a while. My thinking was that I could give the number to my service provider to track the line while we were talking. To my surprised, the customer service unit rather thought that could not be done and I needed to go and log a complaint to a code number for them to attend to it later. There was nothing I could do than to let the scammer go off the hook.

With this big scam and hack, I am sure the service providers would have wished the hackers were available to be tracked in real-time than to follow a complaint that may end dead and blind. What they have failed to know is that their success in little scams of customers will groom the taste and quest for the big cash stored by the telcos and banks.

I wish I never read the story of the hacking but it is a wake-up call for the telcos and banking sector to do more to weed this menace that is rearing its ugly head in our banking sector. Customers have suffered for far too long and this must be a wake-up call to all. The people planted in various places should be weeded out and give customers the needed breathing space.

Scammers must be off the neck of customers to enable them to breathe. This can only happen with the will of telcos to fight for customers.

I woke up to read the headlines “Hackers break into mobile money system, make off with unspecified billions belonging to Airtel, MTN, Stanbic, and other….” which spontaneously aroused the selfish nature in me to inadvertently say “it serves them right”. But, with the saying in Akan, it next time could be me and you must […]

[3
146,148,151,149,145,144,143,147,150,152
post-2152","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-emotions","tag-banking","tag-communication","tag-customer","tag-hacking","tag-mobile","tag-money","tag-scam","tag-telcos","tag-telecommunication","tag-transaction
["GET
