Bruno Fernandes will captain Manchester United in Harry Maguire’s absence, when the Reds take on Paris Saint-Germain.<\/p>\n

The opening game in Group H of the Champions League pits Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side against last season’s beaten finalists in the competition.<\/p>\n

Maguire overcame a slight injury to play and score in the 4-1 win over Newcastle United on Saturday night, but he has now been ruled out of the trip to France.<\/p>\n

During a press conference in Paris on Monday, Solskjaer confirmed Fernandes will captain United in Maguire’s absence.<\/p>\n

It marks swift affirmation of the Portugal international’s leadership qualities, considering he only joined the club in January and won the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe hope Harry will be fit for the weekend for the Chelsea game but we\u2019re not sure,\u201d Solskjaer told reporters in Paris. \u201cThe captain is sitting next to me. Bruno will captain the team tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n

Amusingly, it was news to the no.18!<\/p>\n

\u201cI was not expecting this,\u201d Bruno admitted. \u201cI know the same time as you. Of course, for me, it\u2019s an honor I will be captain for my team-mates and being captain of Manchester United is important for me.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the captain is everybody and everyone needs to help; everyone needs to be a leader. The leadership is different in every player. Tomorrow will not be about me, it\u2019s about the team. Leading the team is every day in the training ground, every training, every game, and I think everyone is doing their own job to lead the team in the way they think is the best.\u201d<\/p>\n

United are missing several players for the Parc des Princes encounter with Eric Bailly, Jesse Lingard, Mason Greenwood and new boy Edinson Cavani also not travelling.
\nHowever, Fernandes will get the chance to lead the side out in a bid to help the Reds get off to a good start in our Champions League campaign.<\/p>\n
