2020 has been marked by the death of various footballing legends and by a pandemic that stopped the beautiful game for months. Let’s have a look, month by month, at the most important events that 2020 has left us.<\/p>\n

An unforgettable year that, although it deprived us of football for several months, it also gifted us some things: Liverpool’s first English League title in 30 years; the consolidation of Erling Haaland as a complete goalscorer; the coronation of Robert Lewandowski as a world-beater; Atalanta’s, Leeds’ and Sevilla’s achievements; the reencounter and hug of Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo at the Camp Nou…<\/p>\n

There was also a lot of bad news: the tragic death of Diego Maradona opened a wound in the hearts of football fans and players around the world. The coronavirus also frustrated many plans and postponed numerous championships, at the same time affecting the finances of many clubs. 2020 will be, for many reasons, a year that goes down in history.<\/p>\n

With 12 photos, one corresponding to each month, let’s look back at 2020 in the world of football.<\/p>\n

January<\/p>\n

For the first time in almost 17 years, Barca sacked a manager in the middle of the season. They were top of the league.<\/p>\n

February<\/p>\n

Watford ended Liverpool’s unbeaten run with an emphatic 3-0 win at Vicarage Road. It wasn’t enough to save them from relegation though.<\/p>\n

March<\/p>\n

One of the last matches to be played in Europe with fans. Atl\u00e9tico Madrid knocked out Liverpool at Anfield.<\/p>\n

April<\/p>\n

Former Leeds United player and England World Cup winner Norman Hunter sadly passed away at the age of 76.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

May<\/p>\n

On 16th May at 16:05 CET, the first match of the top 5 leagues started since the COVID-19 break. Borussia Dortmund-Schalke 04 (4-0).<\/p>\n

June<\/p>\n

Liverpool won their first English League title in 30 years and their first Premier League.<\/p>\n

July<\/p>\n

Real Madrid won La Liga with a great final run.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

August<\/p>\n

Bayern Munich won the Champions League but the 8-2 win over Barcelona was by far the most noteworthy match.<\/p>\n

September<\/p>\n

In the big drama of the summer and after Messi’s fax, Luis Su\u00e1rez packed his bags and went to Atl\u00e9tico Madrid.<\/p>\n

October<\/p>\n

Ronaldo tested positive for COVID-19 which made him miss the match against Messi. He did play against him in December though.<\/p>\n

November<\/p>\n

The saddest news of the year. At the age of 60, Diego Maradona passed away at his home on 25th November and Papa Bouba Diop Senegalese footballer died in Paris on 29 November 2020 following a long illness, he was 42 years. It was reported by L’\u00c9quipe that he had ALS.<\/p>\n

Diop’s funeral was held in Dakar on 4 December before burial in his hometown. In attendance were his widow Marie Aude, their son and daughter, President of Senegal Macky Sall and teammates from the 2002 World Cup.<\/p>\n
