Today I will sleep well because I’m immensely elated. At least we had the opportunity to expose how unfairly Medical Laboratory Scientists have been treated in the healthcare team despite our invaluable contributions. Ghanaians have seen the unfairness we complained about.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The health sector in Ghana is a Cartel. All district hospitals and polyclinics are managed by Medical Doctors, all Regional Hospitals are headed by Medical Doctors, all teaching hospitals CEO’S are Medical Doctors as well.<\/div>\n
Indeed almost all key positions in the Health Sector are occupied by Medical Doctors.<\/div>\n
Group Chauvinism is the order of the day.<\/div>\n
NO Minister of health can succeed with this kind of system. Even the advisor to the president on health is a Medical Doctor.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Nobody can justify that this is not a problem.<\/div>\n
What happened to the other professionals, take note that Medical Doctors are in the minority yet all the important positions in the health sector are occupied by them: they are still in the grabbing mode too.<\/div>\n
If we are serious about building a robust health sector that is hinged on fair representation, inclusiveness, and teamwork then we must begin to have conversations and give other competent health professionals equal opportunity to occupy some of these positions, after all the others are in the majority.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

What was intriguing to me today was the coordinated voice presented by the CEO’ s of the teaching hospitals. Well it’s not surprising they are all Medical Doctors and their professional biases came to the fore.<\/div>\n
As for the HEFRA Registrar it was too glare, can you blame him, he is in love with his profession<\/div>\n
Interesting times ahead.<\/div>\n
The health sector in its current shape and form could be likened to a meeting of fowls (Medical Doctors) how dare you cockroach (Allied health professional) to sit in the meeting of fowls.<\/div>\n
The defects with this structure include but not limited to<\/div>\n
1. Lack of motivation for Non Medics professionals<\/div>\n
2. There is no dissenting voice at meetings as the group members have similar hopes and aspirations<\/div>\n
3. Professional interest will always override collective interest.<\/div>\n
4. A Minister cannot take difficult decisions against the interest of Medical Doctors which is in the interest of Ghanaians.<\/div>\n
5. All other professionals are almost always disgruntled because medicine does not give anyone the alienable right to manage or lead<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
We need an overhaul of the healthcare system that will give all health professionals equal opportunity not only to manage and lead their kind but also take some of the ultimate leadership positions in our healthcare institutions.<\/div>\n
