Ghana is noted to have identified the delta variant of SARS-COV-2. This was announced by the Head of the West Africa Center for Cell Biology and Infectious Pathogens (WACCBIP) of the University of Ghana, Professor Gordon Awandare.<\/p>\n

The Delta variant, also known as B.1.617.2 and first identified in India, is more contagious and resistant to vaccines than the dominant Alpha (U.K.) strain in about 92 countries and also carries a greater risk of hospitalization amidst the possibility of becoming the most lethal.<\/p>\n

As suggested and identified<\/a>, the number one symptom is headache, then followed by sore throat, runny nose, and fever. More “traditional” Covid-19 symptoms such as a cough and loss of smell are rarer with younger people experiencing much more of a bad cold or “funny off feeling\u201d.<\/p>\n

The WHO declared delta a \u201cvariant of concern\u201d<\/a> last month since it has been shown to be more contagious, more deadly, and possibly more resistant to current vaccines and treatments.<\/p>\n

Delta is now replacing alpha, the highly contagious variant that swept across Europe and other parts of the world as far as COVID-19 is concerned.<\/p>\n

Studies suggest it is around 60% more transmissible than the UK variant that had dominated the infections registered in the global pandemic.<\/p>\n

There are concerns if the current vaccines used particularly in Ghana can help with this identified delta strain. Suggestions are that the current data shows the existing Covid-19 vaccines \u201cremain effective at preventing disease and death in people infected with this variant.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is well known that all the vaccines largely do not prevent infections but potently prevent severity and lethality when one is infected. The call for vaccination is good and all efforts must be made to get that.  But candidly, the need to find a way to establish adherence to the wearing of masks should be the topmost priority. The preventiveness achieved with the use of masks has cut across all variants of the virus seen and we must not let that guard down.<\/p>\n

The global community can achieve a lot with efforts to ensure global adherence to using mask especially in a time when lethal variants keep springing up to water down all efforts in vaccine development<\/p>\n

It is, therefore, necessary to be watchful of some recommendations imbibed from health agencies that advise that people who have taken all doses of their vaccine could go about without mask. That is dangerous when this pandemic is not over.<\/p>\n

As we strive to improve on herd immunity, we must not relax with preventive practices that have long-standing records and found to be cost-effective. We must keep stressing on the use of mask, washing of hands with soap and running water and where possible avoid over-crowding.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
