The guidelines say that 76% of women with the mutation who have two or more first-degree relatives who&#8217;ve had breast cancer\u00a0<a tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com\/utsw-patientcare-web-production\/documents\/genetics-and-hereditary-cancers-palb-2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-id=\"93\" data-m=\"{&quot;i&quot;:93,&quot;p&quot;:83,&quot;n&quot;:&quot;partnerLink&quot;,&quot;y&quot;:24,&quot;o&quot;:10}\">will develop the disease by 80.<\/a>\u00a0The mutation also ups the likelihood of ovarian and pancreatic cancer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The new guidelines recommend people with the PALB2 mutation get alternating MRIs and mammograms every six months, as well as pancreatic screenings &#8211; especially if they have a family history of pancreatic cancer.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Some doctors are unaware of the gene&#8217;s link to cancer<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Scientists linked PALB2 mutations to a significant increase in breast cancer risk in 2014, but lagging research and expensive genetic tests have held clinicians back from readily screening patients for it. In some cases, they&#8217;re not even aware the gene exists.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">46-year-old Seattle resident Heidi Marsh got tested for the PALB2 mutation after learning her mom had it, according to The<a tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/08\/17\/health\/breast-cancer-palb2-brca.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-id=\"94\" data-m=\"{&quot;i&quot;:94,&quot;p&quot;:83,&quot;n&quot;:&quot;partnerLink&quot;,&quot;y&quot;:24,&quot;o&quot;:11}\">\u00a0New York Times<\/a>. Marsh said her doctor wasn&#8217;t aware of the gene and the referred oncologist didn&#8217;t recommend surgery.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But after finding a team of clinicians who knew about the gene, Marsh decided to have her fallopian tubes, where ovarian cancers can begin, removed and to undergo regular breast screenings. She&#8217;s also planning an MRI of her pancreas, the Times reported.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;This was not remotely on my radar screen,&#8221; Marsh told the Times. &#8220;In one sense I feel empowered.
