In Ghana, it is alleged people are using drugs by infusion to attain fast and uniform bleached skin and that is dangerous.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The aesthetic approach uses the mechanism to minimize the production of melanin by the melanocytes, a protein responsible for the colouring of the skin, hair and eyes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As research has shown that individuals with dark skin have fewer cases of skin cancer, it presupposes that while under sunlight, melanin has a great protective effect.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bleaching in the name of enhancing beauty may have dire and irreparable consequences. Special skin cells called melanocytes make melanin.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone has the same number of melanocytes, but some people make more melanin than others. If those cells make just a little bit of melanin, your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/beauty\/rm-quiz-hair-care\" data-crosslink-type=\"tools\" data-metrics-link=\"\">hair<\/a>, skin and the iris of your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/eye-health\/ss\/slideshow-eye-conditions-overview\" data-crosslink-type=\"slideshow\" data-metrics-link=\"\">eyes<\/a>\u00a0can be very light. If your cells make more, then your hair, skin, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/eye-health\/eye-assessment\/default.htm\" data-crosslink-type=\"tools\" data-metrics-link=\"\">eyes<\/a>\u00a0will be darker.<\/p>\n<p>The amount of melanin your body makes depends on your genes. If your parents have a lot or a little skin pigment, you\u2019ll probably look like them.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h2 id=\"1-2\">How Melanin Reacts to the Sun<\/h2>\n<p>When you&#8217;re in the sun, your body makes more melanin. It may help protect the body from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays.<\/p>\n<p>But it isn&#8217;t enough to keep you safe from the sun. Your skin is already damaged if you\u2019re sunburned or your skin has turned slightly darker. That&#8217;s why it&#8217;s important to always cover up and wear\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/drugs\/2\/drug-366\/sunscreen+topical\/details\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\" data-metrics-link=\"\">sunscreen<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Studies show people with darker skin get fewer cases of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/melanoma-skin-cancer\/default.htm\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\" data-metrics-link=\"\">skin cancer<\/a>\u00a0than people with lighter skin. More research is needed to know if this is because of the amount of melanin in their skin.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h2 id=\"1-3\">Types of Melanin<\/h2>\n<p>People have three types:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Eumelanin<\/strong>\u00a0makes mostly dark colors in hair,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/eye-health\/video\/eye-anatomy\" data-crosslink-type=\"video\" data-metrics-link=\"\">eyes<\/a>, and skin. There are two types of eumelanin: brown and black. Black and brown hair come from different mixes of black and brown eumelanin. Blonde hair happens when there\u2019s a small amount of brown eumelanin and no black eumelanin.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pheomelanin<\/strong>\u00a0colors the pinkish parts of your body like the lips and nipples. You get red hair when you have the same amount of pheomelanin and eumelanin. Strawberry blonde hair happens when you have brown eumelanin and pheomelanin.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Neuromelanin<\/strong>\u00a0Controls the colors of neurons. It isn&#8217;t involved with the coloring of things you see.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Melanocytes make eumelanin and pheomelanin. Neuromelanin is found in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/brain\/picture-of-the-brain\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\" data-metrics-link=\"\">brain<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h2 id=\"1-4\">Disorders Related to Melanin<\/h2>\n<p>Issues with melanin are linked to several skin pigment disorders.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-page active-page\" data-page=\"2\">\n<div id=\"ad-top-pos-141-2\" class=\"module ad emb-top-ad trck1\" data-google-query-id=\"CJGr8tKBuPMCFUhIGwod-E8Erw\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/4312434\/consumer\/webmd_19__container__\"><strong>Albinism<\/strong>. This rare disorder results from very little melanin. People with albinism have white hair, blue eyes, and pale skin, and may have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/eye-health\/default.htm\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\" data-metrics-link=\"\">vision<\/a>\u00a0problems. They should wear sun protection to avoid\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/melanoma-skin-cancer\/sun-skin-cancer\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\" data-metrics-link=\"\">sun damage<\/a>. There is no treatment.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<section><strong>Melasma<\/strong>. People with melasma have brownish patches on their face. Researchers think it\u2019s caused by hormones,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/sex\/birth-control\/birth-control-pills\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\" data-metrics-link=\"\">birth control pills<\/a>, and exposure to the sun. Prescription creams can lighten melasma, and sunscreens can keep it from getting worse. Laser treatment and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/beauty\/cosmetic-procedures-chemical-peel-treatments\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\" data-metrics-link=\"\">chemical peels<\/a>\u00a0might also help.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vitiligo<\/strong>. When you lose melanocytes, you get smooth, white patches on your skin. There&#8217;s no cure, but treatment includes dyes, UV\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/skin-problems-and-treatments\/psoriasis\/phototherapy\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\" data-metrics-link=\"\">light therapy<\/a>, light-sensitive medicines, corticosteroid creams, and surgery.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pigment loss after skin damage<\/strong>. Sometimes after your skin is burned, blistered, or infected, your body can\u2019t replace melanin in the area that is damaged. You won\u2019t need treatment. You can cover the area with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/beauty\/rm-quiz-makeup\" data-crosslink-type=\"tools\" data-metrics-link=\"\">makeup<\/a>\u00a0if it bothers you.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/parkinsons-disease\/default.htm\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\" data-metrics-link=\"\">Parkinson&#8217;s disease<\/a><\/strong>. In Parkinson\u2019s disease, neuromelanin in your brain drops as brain cells in an area called the substantia nigra die. Normally, the amount of neuromelanin in the brain increases as we get older.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/a-to-z-guides\/hearing-loss-causes-symptoms-treatment\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\" data-metrics-link=\"\">Hearing loss<\/a><\/strong>. Melanin seems to play a role in hearing.
