On behalf of The Church of Pentecost, I extend profound gratitude to the Lord God Almighty – the creator and sustainer of the worlds. We also appreciate the President, His Excellency, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his response to our invitation to partner The Church of Pentecost to launch this Environmental Care Campaign; which we intend to run nationwide in 2018/2019. Truly, we recognise that this intervention, Environmental Care Campaign, happens to be the heartbeat of His Excellency, the President and that this fostered collaboration is a demonstration of His Excellency’s personal interest in this Campaign and his passion to make Ghana clean and Accra the cleanliest city by 2020.
As a church, we have made it a policy each year to identify and publicize an issue of national concern with the view to playing our prophetic role to help achieve social order for sustained national development. Spurred on by this vision, we launched the Agent of Peace Campaign in 2016 prior to the General Elections. We have no doubts whatsoever, that the campaign contributed significantly to educate the general populace on voting procedures, tolerance of divergent political views and to calm down nerves of many Ghanaians.
In 2017, our focus was on Entrepreneurship and Investment as well as Gambling and the Social Media. This year, our focus has been on Creation Care. It is out of this that we have developed various strategies to run a campaign on Environmental Care under the slogan, Environmental Care, My Responsibility.
VISION 2023 PROVISION ON CHURCH-STATE STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP IN DEVELOPING GHANA.
The Environmental Care Campaign is one of the many Church-State partnerships captured in the church’s Vision for the next five years, dubbed Vision 2023. Vision 2023 has as its overarching theme, “Possessing the Nations: Equipping the Church to transform every sphere of society with values and principles of the Kingdom of God”. This Vision places emphases on the dual identity of the Church; that the church is called out of the world to belong to God and sent back into the world to witness and to serve. In this regard, the church in the next five years intends to do more than before in partnering Government in its sustainable development agenda.
Ladies and Gentlemen, I want to at this moment present to this house, a few of these proposed interventions.
- The church will partner the government to provide potable drinking water in some selected deprived
- We shall initiate a programme in collaboration with the Government to put up Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds to improve access to health care in some selected deprived
- The church shall be committed to partnering the Government to establish more public basic schools at strategic places to enable the poor have improved access to education.

We will initiate a security-based development project dubbed “Police Station & Post Project (PSPP)” to put up police stations/police posts in some selected deprived and insecure areas. This will be our contribution to Government efforts to provide Police Posts in communities where they are needed.
- In collaboration with the Ghana Prisons Service, the church will initiate the construction of accommodation facilities (cells) for selected prisons in the country as part of efforts to support Government ease congestions in those

As part of our efforts to promote the values and principles of the Kingdom of God in our state and non-state institutions, the church shall seek to train more chaplains and deploy them to various institutions such as the Military, Police, Prisons, Hospice/Hospitals, sports, orphanages, palaces as well as some corporate institutions.

We shall also be committed to strengthening ministry to persons with disabilities. Among other things, we shall design intervention programmes to help us care and attend to the needs of the disabled community; including the provision of braille materials for people who are blind, listening devices for people who are hearing impaired, and large prints for people who are visually impaired. We shall as well endeavour to equip these persons with the needed skills to be productive in the communities in which they live.
- Administrative Areas and districts of the church shall be encouraged to construct shelters at bus stops for communal use.

We shall also encourage our assemblies, districts and areas of the church to identify community challenges that the church can work on in contributing to community level
These and many more the church will do in the next five years as part of our strategic partnership with Government to contribute to the transformation of the nation.
ENVIRONMENTAL CARE CAMPAIGN APPROACH
Environmental Care Campaign is planned to be tackled in 4 main categories; Education, Clean-up Exercises, Community-based initiatives and other activities.
a. Education
In this intervening area, we shall seek to focus on attitudinal change as we highlight on some unhealthy practices that contribute to environmental degradation: open defecation, noise pollution, improper disposal of waste, poor handling of pests and domestic animals, and unfriendly environmental-means of livelihood. We shall also seek to educate our members and the general public on the existing environmental by-laws.
In this regard, we have already organised leadership training for our lay leaders (over 100,000 Elders, Deacons and Deaconesses) on Environmental Care. Additionally, we have produced 300,000 brochures on Environmental Care to be used in the public education. This has been translated into 8 local languages (Asante Twi, Akuapim Twi, Ewe, Fante, Ga, Nzema, Kokomba and Dangme); French and English. Again, the 2019 Bible Study and Home Cell Manual of the church will feature about 10 lessons on Environmental issues. This week, all The Church of Pentecost radio broadcasts on Peace FM, Adom FM, Sunny FM, Obonu FM, Vision 1 FM have been used to educate the public on the above subject areas. This will continue in the weeksahead.
b. Clean Up Exercise
This approach seeks to instil in members the discipline to be physically responsible and involved in the care and cleaning of the environment. This will take place at the Home Cells (over 60,000 Cells), Assemblies (over 15,000 local congregations), Districts (over 1,600 pastoral Districts) and the Areas (65Areas).
c. Community-based Initiatives
This is to provide the various levels of the church the liberty to identify community- based initiatives related to the environment and pursue them. Each Area is expected to collate their community-based initiatives and submit to the head office for follow up.
In addition to the above, there shall be other activities such as;

a bi-monthly Clean-up Exercises in public spaces at the districtlevel;
- provision of bins for all Mission Houses, Church buildings, homes and workplaces of members;
-
tree planting exercises at church sites, mission houses and other specific areas. This would be done in collaboration with the Forestry Commission in the various Districts;
- use Pentecost Hour periods on the various Radio stations to teach about cleanliness at
PARTNERSHIP WITH ZOOMLION GHANA LTD
Undoubtedly, Zoomlion Ghana Ltd is one of the most effective and renowned Waste Management Companies in Ghana. In coming out with this programme, the church wrote to the Company and sought their support. They have agreed to partner the church inthis noble task. They will be providing personnel and equipment during our clean-up exercises across the nation. It is worth informing the house that, for the Kasoa Clean Up Campaign, Zoomlion has generously offered to distribute 500 waste bins and has also agreed to erect some litter bins at some strategic places. I take this opportunity to express the church’s appreciation to the CEO of Zoomlion Ghana Ltd. for committing himself to this noble intervention.
EXPECTATIONS FROM GOVERNMENT
In recognition of the fact that this Campaign is in line with the vision of the President, His Excellency, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, we kindly request Government to;
- Support the launch of the Campaign at the various levels by directing government institutions concerned with the management of our environment such as Ministries of Sanitation, Environment, Local Government, Forestry, NCCE etc. to support this initiative by the church.

Be committed to environmental law enforcement at all levels
-
Provide waste bins at all levels so that as we educate the public, we could direct them to where bins could be
- Engage efficient Waste Management Companies to ensure the prompt collection of waste from homes and communities.
CONCLUSION
We are confident that the up-coming endeavour will bring to bear on the general public the need to consciously collaborate with governments, law enforcement agencies, and waste management companies to ensure clean and healthy environments. Further, we maintain high hopes that this collaborative efforts between the church and government to preserve the environment, keep our drains and highways free of wastes will continue unhindered.
