As part of its 2021 Annual National Congress, a section of the leadership and members of the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS) including the President of the Professional Body, Dr. Abu Abudul Rahamani, visited Junior High School (JHS) students of the Desert Pastures International School in Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region of Ghana.
This session was planned as part of the activities of the ANC 2021 to have time with the future leaders of the Country. The team included professionals with expertise in the area of consultants of medical laboratory science, clinical microbiology, histopathology, chemical pathology, immunology, transfusion medicine, virology, bacteriology, health research, and public health. Two of the professionals were entrepreneurs who are running private medical laboratory services.
The Professionals took turns to talk to the students about what they do and encouraged them to take their studies seriously to be able to attain the academic heights they desire. The interaction which was in the form of an open forum allowed the students to ask questions about their future careers.
Among the few students that were nominated at random to talk about their future professional aspirations were those who desire to be lawyers, audio engineers, medical doctors, journalists, doctors in pharmacy, and urologists to mention but a few. The students demonstrated a clear understanding of what they need to do to become the professionals they aspire. For one of the students who mentioned her career was to be a urologist, she knew the statistics of the number of such specialists produced each year in Ghana and she wants to come and add to the number to contribute to solving the problems Ghanaians are facing.
The President and the PRO of GAMLS shared some words with the students on what they need to do to be able to pass their exams and to remain responsible citizens. They were advised to always take their teachers seriously with whatever they teach them especially in an institution with a foundation on good Christian teachings and values.
The PRO led the students to pledge on taking their studies seriously to make the academic laurels with the help of God and being serious with their books.
The interactions ended with a brief presentation on mentorship and sharing of contacts with students who wanted to be mentored.
This was a great time shared with students and as expressed by both sides, it will go a long way to shape the future we have.
