One of the stages of the malaria parasite that needs to be targeted because it contributes to malaria transmission is the gametocytes. This is the stage of the parasite that the mosquito picks and then pit into others who are not infected.
Studies in animal models have shown that this stage of the malaria parasite can stay in the bone marrow.
