Who am I?

One of the crises an individual could encounter in life is the “identity crisis”.

I have suffered an identity crisis, particularly in my professional politics. I am Dennis Adu-Gyasi, who got the chance to be the first Public Relations Officer for the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS) in 2016 under the leadership of the current President of the Professional Body. I am not too sure why the president decided to institute an office that never existed and made me the first person to speak for him. I used him because the president is the mouthpiece of GAMLS as the constitution ascribes. The position of the PRO became widely accepted by members of GAMLS and all advocated to make room for the inclusion of the office as part of the National Executive Council (NEC) of GAMLS.

One of the mandates that emerged was speaking on issues when GAMLS embarked on industrial action in 2016. This was an election year in Ghana. People within and without GAMLS had their own mind as doing the bidding of the then opposition party- New Patriotic Party (NPP). Justifying why all medical laboratory services in Ghana should be suspended was to the government a threat to national security and only people who were against the progress of the nation would justify that position. Several people in the then government gave me their own mind and warned me to be careful. Supporters of the party in government, National Democratic Congress (NDC) and those within the professional body, GAMLS, equally gave me their piece of mind. People in the opposition party at that time hailed how well I defended why we should remain on “strike” should they not call us to the table to discuss our matter.

The people that were against my posture in speaking for GAMLS in 2018 when we needed to embark on another industrial action applauded my oratory skills. To them, they did not know what training I had to be that experience in exposing matters of concern to the development of medical laboratory services in Ghana. At that same period, I had to defend why we needed certain pressers even within my own professional body. Simply because the tables had turned and the NPP was now in power controlling affairs. To them, I am against the government and seeking my own interest in the NDC.

I remember when I got the support from GETFund to go on a visit to the laboratory of one of my mentors, many people thought that the government had given me that opportunity simply because I belonged to them. But it was during that same year that I had to speak to defend the industrial action which made people think I had a soft spot for the opposition party. I am sure of one thing and that is I am a Ghanaian who has always had a voting identification card and anytime the time presented itself, I voted in national elections.

I had to sign a presser recently to applaud a campaign promise by the NDC and the events that unfolded afterward could not be comprehended. As much as the communication team members are displaying the presser as an endorsement from GAMLS, those in the party of the current government are seeking to discredit me as someone who is seeking his own interest in the next government to be formed by the NDC should they win the up and coming national election (2020). I wish the God I serve would have shown me who will win the elections to enable me to align myself well is I were to be that selfish. Among some members of the professional body, I am a card bearing member of NDC but unfortunately, I cannot find my card and I keep asking for my ID number. People seem to know me more than myself if I may say so. This is clear in the unedited statement posted on one of the regional WhatsApp platforms of GAMLS.

“How could you stood that low??, just a manifesto pledge??? Do you know what the NDC has promised the Doctors?? I cannot think far!!!

I’m filled with much distaste to tell you that this unilateral decision by section of leadership is the greatest all-time error and will hunt you and many generations in turns.

Nobody is against showing appreciation to a political party, but to have done so in a manner as though GAMLS was an organ under the communication auspices of the NDC with such indecorous and alacrity was most unfortunate.

We are not oblivious of the fact that our young ones knelt down from office to office begging for clearance in the immediate past NDC government but to no avail

It took the intervention of the NPP government through the recent unprecedented gargantuan clearance to light up hopes in the young scientists and their families. Where was GAMLS then??

There is no need to emphasize the fact that a decorated Monkey is still a Monkey, and a lion is a lion in a wolf’s skin

We don’t need any scientific lens to unravel the political ink behind the production of this purposeless communique.

Must it take a rocket scientist to tell you that the NDC can never win any election in Ghana with this current crop of leadership

We are not going to sit aloof and watch self seeking individuals to use the association as a lobbying tool to lobby for positions in future NDC government, not in my life time.

If you want us to go the political way we are more than battle ready for the showdown.

It is no secret that the signitaries to this release are card bearing member of the NDC and we won’t sit down for the NDC to use them to cause political division in our rank and file”

It beats my imagination why people know me that much and particularly more than myself. It is therefore not surprising the woman of my home could not do anything more than to advise me to be careful with some of my posts. Lol.

I am still confused and not clear on what I have done wrong to warrant the mistrust across the two political parties when all I have done and to stand for is what will benefit every Ghanaian. Improving our medical laboratory service delivery is something for everyone who may end up as a patient.

I will not be surprised the Church of Pentecost will be called upon to look into why I do not deserve to be an elder and to preside in one of the assemblies of the Church. The “demon” I am. What I want to assure people is that “I am not perturbed …” and will stand for the truth as far as my life is concerned.

Captured in this feature are snapshots of some of my Facebook posts from 2016 when NDC was in power. I am surprised how these suggest I am a card bearing member than one who just speaks his mind as needful. Facebook is one of the places I decided to speak my mind especially when I do not have the opportunity to do so to those at the helm of affairs.

People should stop seeing me with political lenses. When the time comes for me to declare an alliance, I know God will lead me through. Till then, I still remain a “bride of Christ seeking to perfect Holiness for His arrival”. Therefore, as much as possible, I will speak the truth on matters of interest to humanity. So help me God!
