Our Profession seems to be afflicted with issues that keep repeating itself in different forms among different generations.
In the 1980s we are told there was a strong animosity between Technicians who were certificate holders and Technologists who were Diploma holders. This led to Technicians breaking away to form an association. It was in the late 1980s that they rejoined the Technologists to form the association we now have.
Fast forward to the 2000s when the certificate program was changed to diploma hell broke loose. The old diploma holders claimed their diploma was an in-depth diploma (what that meant, only they understood it) so could not be the same as the new diploma.
The certificate holders also claimed the new diploma holders didn’t know anything. This cliché they don’t know anything has become synonymous with Lab Men.
Indeed, there were seniors who swore never to allow the diploma holders to be placed higher.
KNUST entered the fray by introducing the 4-year Bachelor of Sciences program. When the graduates came out the cliché’ they don’t know anything came up again.
Some of the seniors who felt threatened by these small boys really frustrated them. They preferred teaching medical students rather than the small boys who will come and lord themselves over them. Are we therefore surprised that today the Medics feel we are incapable of managing our affairs?
This went on till the School of Allied Health Sciences came in to start the degree program and then some of these seniors enrolled and that noise abated.
Fast forward, we now have Doctor of Medical Laboratory Sciences, MLSD coming into being. Once again, the old devil has emerged with the same cliché this is not different from degree essentially saying they don’t know anything in a refined way
Indeed, some seniors and even colleagues are uncomfortable with the thoughts of small boys calling themselves doctors and being paid higher than them so even though we started before the Pharmacist they have gotten recognition by the Ministry of Health.
I am bringing these issues out now to draw our attention to some past misdeeds that were self-inflicted and have caused us a lot.
In my second part, I will attempt to proffer some solutions.
